Skin Cancer Screening and Management
Bayside Family Medical has a comprehensive skin cancer screening and management service in our modern treatment facility. Our skin cancer doctors are experienced in the detection, treatment and removal or biopsy of skin cancers such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and solar keratosis.
Why should you have a skin check-up?
As a nation, we have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. According to figures from the Cancer Council, approximately two in three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer before they reach 70. With the risk of skin cancer being so high, it’s imperative to have your skin checked regularly for suspicious moles and lesions.
How often should you have a skin check-up?
We recommend getting an annual skin check-up. If you are concerned about any changes to your skin or a particular mole, please make an appointment as soon as possible. If a family member has ever been diagnosed with skin cancer, it’s a good idea for you to schedule a skin check-up with our Cheltenham skin cancer doctors to be safe.
What’s involved?
During your 30-minute appointment, your doctor will undertake a detailed, full-body skin examination. The practitioner may take images of any suspicious moles and lesions, to be stored on a FotoFinder Digital Dermoscopy system for future reference. This revolutionary technology is designed for early skin cancer detection, and is strongly advised for any at risk patients, especially those with a past history or family history of skin cancer.
Patients are asked not to wear makeup or face creams to this consultation.

Biopsies and surgery
If your doctor is concerned about a particular mole or lesion, we may suggest a biopsy to determine whether it is malignant. This can be performed on site at our Cheltenham medical clinic. We will take a small sample of the mole, then send it away for testing. Usually test results are available within three days.
If the mole or lesion is malignant, our Cheltenham doctors can remove it on site via minor surgery. In this way we can remove most types of skin cancers or suspicious moles. Your doctor can explain the cost, results processing time and anticipated downtime (if any) to you during your appointment.
